This JDC-Ashalim Quarterly Update highlights a number of major events and program activities in the first quarter of 2009. We are pleased to report on a number of "firsts" – new programs that opened and the Ashalim Prizes that were awarded for the first time to individuals and teams in Israel who developed successful and innovative initiatives for children and youth at risk.

Some 19,000 children and youth inJDC- Ashalim programs in 18 localities/regions in the Southern Conflict Zone were directly affected by the Hamas attacks on their hometowns. Among these children are "veterans" to the conflict, from Sderot and the Gaza border communities.  During Operation Cast Lead, thousands more experienced  the fear and anxiety of living in the line of fire.
