About Children and Youth at Risk

"In the first two months, I witnessed changes in the behavior of the children in the Moadonit, from aggressiveness to tolerance for one another, from hyperactivity to a relaxed calm, from apathy about what was taking place to deep commitment to the process, and from boredom to curiosity." - Teacher in arts enrichment program introduced into the network of after school Moadoniot for at-risk children (ages 6-12)

Who We Are

Ashalim is the central nonprofit organization in Israel dedicated to the planning and development of services for at-risk children and youth and their families.

Ashalim was born of the belief that in order for Israel to be a healthy and thriving state, its children, too, must thrive. In 1998, JDC-Israel (the Israeli arm of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Inc.) recognized the growing needs of Israeli children and launched Ashalim together with JDC-Israel, the UJA-Federation of New York, and the Government of Israel (as represented by the Ministries of Education, Finance, Health, and Social Affairs, and the National Insurance Institute).

Our professional team includes psychologists, educators, health and social workers who combine years of field experience together with the vision and planning mindset.  We work with researchers at the Myers-JDC-Brookdale Institute and Israeli academic institutions to respond to troubling trends and to evaluate Ashalim programs.

Ashalim programs are supported primarily by the founding partners, Jewish Community Federations and private funders.
