About Children and Youth at Risk

"My impression was that each of the children in the group who participated in the exciting and challenging art sessions over the course of the year went through a process – emotional, cognitive and creative – at the time and at the pace that was right for him/her." – Teacher in arts enrichment program introduced into the network of after school

Moadoniot for at-risk children (ages 6-12)

Children

Between the ages of six to twelve, children take strides forward in building their own identity. At this stage in life, family, elementary school and community each play major roles in a child's development. In order to build confidence and a sense of positive self- and family-worth, a child needs regular, stable contact with significant figures as a model for emulation and for imparting values, behavioral habits and limits. Children at this age who are exposed to neglect, violence or abuse, and children who experience deprivation that influences their proper development, respond with behavioral and emotional problems

And so, when there is a child at risk, there is a family and community at risk. Ashalim programs focus on the strengths in a child's natural environment – building stronger families, support networks and communities.

Ashalim programs for elementary-age children aim to:

§         Develop and provide a basket of services for children and parents in the community.

§         Build a continuum of protection, accompaniment and treatment for children who are victims of abuse.

§         Develop and provide accompaniment for out-of-home frameworks as a solution for children on the extreme edge of the risk continuum.

§         Create opportunities for students to improve their academic performance, gain self-confidence and enhance their personal growth.
